Spring ‘Makeup Bag Makeover’

I regularly write a makeup column for The Beacon Magazine. In their March/April edition I wrote about spring cleaning your makeup bag. This is something everyone should do. See below for the full article.

 Question:Did you know that out of date makeup may harbour numerous bacteria?

That’s right, makeup has a shelf life and it may be more harmful than you might think to carry on using them beyond their life span.  The worse case scenario is that you could develop a rash or skin infection if the product has become contaminated with bacteria.  The chances of this happening however are extremely rare, but it’s worth bearing in mind.  Always look out for the ‘Use by’ symbol which appears on the back of most products.

Here are some rough guidelines to makeup product shelf life;

  • Mascara: 3-6 months
  • Moisturiser: 3-12months
  • Oil Free Foundations: 12 months
  • Moisturising/Cream and Compact Foundations: 18 months
  • Compact Powder: 2 years.  Loose Powder up to 3 years
  • Blushers: Cream: 12-18 months,      Powder: 2 Years
  • Eye Shadows: Cream: 12-18 months,     Powders:  2 Years
  • Eye Liner and Lip Liner: 2 Years
  • Lipstick: 2 Years

Some cautionary notes:
Do not use eyeshadow if you have an eye infection.  This could make your problem worse, inadvertently infecting the product and leading to further problems in the future.  On the same note, avoid using lipstick or lipgloss if you are suffering with a cold sore.  Always wash your makeup brushes at least once or twice a week to keep bacteria at bay and your brushes in tip top condition! My current favourite brushes are from Bobbi Brown, they are excellent quality and if you look after them properly they will last a lifetime. To easily clean your brushes use Bare Minerals ‘Quick Change’ or ‘Brush Shampoo’ brush cleaner.
